8 Companies to Work for While in College That Help Pay for Your Education

Ever think of earning money while you are learning? One of the best ways to pay for college as an 18-year-old or 26-year-old is to find part-time or full-time jobs at companies that are flexible with your class schedule that help you pay for college. There are several companies that offer tuition assistance or tuition reimbursement programs as an employee benefit. Some companies set aside funds to assist their employees with paying for college and it is not part of your regular salary.

The employee must pay the initial cost of the college tuition and fees for the courses taken. Once the courses are completed and based on the company guidelines for the tuition reimbursement program such as a satisfactory grade or job-related degree program, the employer will reimburse partial or all the tuition and fees paid by the employee.

If you must work like many students do today to help pay for your college tuition and expenses, consider looking into one of the following companies that help students on their path to success:

1. Starbucks

The Starbucks College Achievement Plan was introduced in June 2014 in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU). This opportunity offers all eligible part-time and full-time U.S. partners (employees) to earn their bachelor’s degree with full tuition coverage at ASU’s online degree program. Partners need to work on average of 20 hours a week and can apply to ASU upon hire after they become benefits eligible.

2. Verizon

Verizon provides its employees with up to $8,000 each year tuition assistance for approved courses or degree programs taken from an accredited institution through the program guidelines and related to the business. The company provided $77 million in tuition assistance to employees in 2017.

3. AT&T

AT&T employees are eligible to receive up to $8,000 in tuition assistance a year and a lifetime maximum of $25,000 for undergraduate programs.

4. Publix

The company’s tuition reimbursement program covers traditional undergraduate degree programs and some individual courses, online programs, and technical training. Any associate at Publix with a minimum of six months of continuous employment and works an average of 10 hours a week is eligible to participate in the program.

For four-year college and university enrollment, associates may be reimbursed up to $3,200 a year and $12,800 maximum limit. For other courses of study such as individual courses, online programs, technical programs, and courses at a community college for an undergraduate program, associates may be reimbursed up to $1,700 a year and $3,400 maximum limit.

5. UPS

For UPS’ Tuition Assistance Program, part-time employees are eligible to receive up to $5,250 a year and up to $25,000 lifetime maximum. Employees are eligible for the program the day they are hired.

The program is available to full-time non-union employees, part-time management employees, and part-time union employees. According to UPS’s website, the company provided $31 million in tuition support to about 12,000 students in 2017.

6. Chipotle

Full-time and part-time employees of the company are eligible to receive up to $5,250 a year through the educational assistance program from Guild Education.

7. Bank of America

Since 2009, Bank of America reimburses eligible employees up to $5,250 per year for job-related courses or to fulfill a job-related undergraduate degree program. Employees must be employed for a minimum of six months and work at least 20 hours a week.

8. Home Depot

In partnership with EdAssist, the Home Depot Tuition Reimbursement Program offers reimbursement for approved courses to salaried associates a maximum of $5,000 annually, full-time hourly associates up to $3,000 a year, and for part-time hourly associates a maximum reimbursement of $1,500 per year.
